Marble Madness

Working in teams, eighth grade students worked tirelessly for weeks on their marble track assignment in science class. The main goal of the project was to build a track that will keep a marble rolling for at least 10 seconds. Students turned the assignment into an exciting challenge, testing their creativity and engineering skills while learning about physics concepts such as momentum, gravity and friction as they experimented with different track designs. By incorporating loops, funnels and other elements, the eighth graders were able to manipulate the marble’s speed and direction, keeping it rolling for as long as possible.

“The project was a great way for students to combine problem-solving with hands-on learning,” technology teacher Scott Hocutt said. “There was also some friendly competition once word got out regarding the ‘top notch’ trophy that would be awarded in each class, and many students went far beyond the required time. The students put in a lot of effort and perseverance and I am proud of their determination and the work produced.”
